Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, the compound mostly derived from industrial hemp and which does not produce the psychoactive effect associated with the marijuana high, has been enjoying record setting sales growth in recent years. The substance is sufficiently popular that it is experiencing noteworthy strong consumer demand in spite of the fact that the state laws and federal laws surrounding these products remain somewhat murky, especially in certain states. However, the laws regarding hemp derived products such as CBD products have become much less murky since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill by the U.S. Congress in December of 2018 and the signing of that bill into law. Since the passage and signing of the Farm Bill, a number of U.S. national retailers have either starting selling CBD products or have indicated their plans to do so. Some retailers, such as the national vitamin chain GNC are currently only offering topical CBD creams while others are offering CBD capsules and CBD oils. But a large portion of CBD sales occur online where consumers can select from a greater amount of brand choices, while retail store often carry a limited amount of brands. There is much room for growth in the CBD market as research surveying has indicated that thus far only 24% of those surveyed have indicated that they have tried a CBD product. Retail sales for many of the most popular CBD brands seems to suggest that many consumers seeking the best CBD products are choosing those that do not contain additional unnecessary ingredients or flavorings.
Public attitudes towards both hemp and marijuana have changed significantly in recent years. On the marijuana side of the equation THC-laden cannabis is currently illegal under Federal law even though 33 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws legalizing marijuana in one form or another. Other states are working toward marijuana legalization including New York and New Jersey as some major east coast states seek to move towards a relaxation of marijuana prohibition. Public acceptance of marijuana has markedly changed in recent years and both surveys and in some cases referendum votes have indicated that approximately 50% of U.S. citizens favor legalization, or at least decriminalization. And, that number appears to be growing. A recent research report by a prominent cannabis industry research firm indicates that comparing attitudes show some eye opening statistics. Based on the firms' research survey of over 3,000 cannabis users they found that among mothers who consume cannabis, they consume cannabis more frequently than do women without children. And, 87% of mothers who consume cannabis indicate their use is partially for recreational purposes while only 13% use it solely for medicinal purposes.
