Sam Burns maintained his two-shot lead at the Genesis Invitational early Sunday following the completion of the darkness-delayed third round at Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Burns will head back to Riviera Country Club's first tee later Sunday for the final round at 9-under-par 204, after his 3-over 74 in the third round. It was the worst third-round score of any player in the top 10.
Dustin Johnson, who shot a 71 in the third round, Max Homa (70) and England's Matthew Fitzpatrick (69) were tied for second place at 7-under. A group of six tied for fifth place at 5-under par were Talor Gooch (69), Tony Finau (70), Patrick Cantlay (71), Sweden's Alex Noren (71) and Australia's Cameron Smith (71) and Matt Jones (69).
Burns was on the first tee in the final group Saturday when the third round was delayed for nearly four hours because of high winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph.
When the round resumed, Burns finished 13 holes before darkness arrived, dropping two shots on the day but still holding a two-shot lead at 10-under. He entered Saturday with a five-shot lead.
Burns closed Saturday's shortened round with a bogey at both Nos. 12 and 13. He returned to the course at 6:40 a.m. local time Sunday and had another bogey at No. 14, but he finished the round with four consecutive pars.
"Just the way we hung in there the last five holes, I was proud of the way that we just kept fighting," Burns said on the Golf Channel broadcast, after starting his day with a 4 a.m. wakeup call.
"That's going to be something you have to do around this place the rest of the day."
Fitzpatrick also dropped a shot after the resumption of play Sunday, posting a bogey at the No. 18 closing hole.
Johnson and Homa each had five consecutive pars to complete the third round, moving a shot closer to the lead thanks to Burns' bogey at No. 14.
Burns, 24, is aiming for his first career victory on the PGA Tour. He won the Savannah Golf Championship in 2018, a tournament on the Web.com Tour.
Fitzpatrick, 26, has six victories on the European Tour but has not won on the PGA Tour. He was the 2013 U.S. Amateur champion.
Johnson, 36, is a 24-time winner on the PGA Tour. He is also the 2020 Masters winner as well as the 2016 U.S. Open champion.
Homa, 30, has won once on the PGA Tour, taking the Wells Fargo Championship in 2019.
